Course Overview
This nationally recognised Asthma & Anaphylaxis course provides the skills,
knowledge, and confidence to respond to asthma attacks and anaphylactic emergencies in the workplace or community. The course is suitable for workers, educators, workplace first aiders, and community members who may need to provide emergency care to adults, children, or infants experiencing asthma or anaphylaxis.
You’ll learn how to recognise symptoms early, provide effective first aid, use asthma medication and adrenaline autoinjectors correctly, and implement risk management strategies for individuals diagnosed as being at risk. Training is delivered in line with Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) Guidelines, ASCIA Action Plans, and relevant national clinical standards.
What You’ll Learn
You’ll gain practical skills to confidently manage asthma and anaphylaxis emergencies, including how to:
Recognise signs and symptoms of asthma and anaphylaxis
Provide first aid for mild, moderate, and severe asthma attacks
Use inhalers, spacers, and masks correctly
Administer an adrenaline autoinjector for anaphylaxis
Follow Asthma First Aid Protocols and ASCIA Action Plans
Respond to allergic reactions and medical emergencies
Develop risk management and risk minimisation strategies
Complete risk assessments for individuals at risk
Develop and implement individual asthma and anaphylaxis management plans
Communicate effectively with emergency services, parents, carers, and workplaces
Complete incident and first aid documentation
Course Structure
1. Online – Pre-course learning modules and multiple-choice quiz.
2. Face-to-face – In person course recap and practical assessments.
3. Certification – Digital Statement of Attainment issued upon successful completion.
Course Duration
Online learning: Approx. 3 hours
Face to face practical: + 30 minutes onto CPR or First Aid sessions (varies by course set)
Assessment
Online learning Modules: Multiple-choice exam + Case studies & individual management plan
Practical demonstrations:
- Infant - Administer asthma medication using a mask and spacer
- Child - Administer asthma medication (with a spacer) using a Personal Asthma Action Plan
- Adult - Administer asthma medication (without a spacer), using the Asthma First Aid Protocol developed by NACA
- Administer an adrenaline autoinjector for anaphylaxis
- Provide first aid for an allergic reaction
Certificate Validity
- Asthma Management – Valid for 3 years
- Anaphylaxis Management – Valid for 3 years
Some childcare centres and organisations require staff to refresh these qualifications annually as part of their internal policies.
